Dear Families,
I hope everyone had a fun and safe Halloween!
I hope everyone had a fun and safe Halloween!
Last week we read a book titled How Many Seeds In A Pumpkin? This book is a fantastic true story about a class learning how to estimate the amount of seeds in a pumpkin. After reading the story we used the clues from the book to observe the three different pumpkins in our room (small, medium, large) and estimate how many would be in each. Then we worked in small groups to scoop the seeds out of each pumpkin. The students then cleaned off the seeds and began grouping the seeds in groups of 5s or 10s. We added them up and circled up again to talk about our findings. The students reflected on their work and why they thought each pumpkin had the amount they had. They remembered to utilize the clues from the book. The pumpkin with the darkest color orange and the most lines outside usually have the most seeds because it was on the vine the longest. It was a fun project!
We also had a wonderful visit from Mrs. Barker. She read the book Raising Dragons and after the story the students drew a picture of a dragon. I was amazed by the creative and thoughtful details the students drew. The dragons are displayed in the hallway.
As part of our social studies unit we talked about what makes a family? We read the book In Our Mother’s House by Patricia Placco. In this book the family shares memories and traditions, and emphasizes the feelings you have being in a family. This book was a fabulous intro for us to share our own personal thoughts. I have posted the student’s feelings of what they believe makes a family in our classroom. A few thoughts that made me smile were; family is acceptance, families stick together like magnets, families are supportive and work like a team, ect. Next week we will discuss the questions; What do you love about your family?, How does it feel to be in a family?, Are all families the same?, What makes them different?.
I would love to interview 2 or 3 families and ask the questions posed in class to the whole family as a unit. I would like to capture candidly your responses on video. If you are interested please let me know. Mrs. Nelson and I are hoping to create a slideshow with the student responses, artwork, and the family interviews. We would love to showcase it at All School Meeting.
I would like to personally thank all the family members that helped organize the Halloween party. The students had a fantastic time!
Have a wonderful night!
Warmly,
Alyson
