Dear Families,
Wow, I honestly can say that this week has been the most rewarding week in my teaching career. Seeing your children up on stage, delivering a powerful message like they did, is something I will cherish forever. I am so proud of the leadership and commitment all the first graders have taken while preparing for our performance. The amazing feedback we received from the community gave the students a sense of belonging. Most importantly, they felt the impact of taking action!
This week we also had the opportunity to begin our pen pal adventure with Hilario’s old school in Honduras. Each student wrote at least one letter to a first grader, sharing who they are and something about themselves. The students are so excited to hear back from their pen pal after winter break. To educate ourselves about Honduras we watched a few videos and Hilario shared his favorite things to do when he visits. Ask your child what they learned about Honduras!
As you can imagine the students are anxiously waiting for the holidays to come. Many of the students take part in “giving” during the season with their families. After sharing what some families do one student said, “Can we do that too?,” of course I said “sure!”
Next week we will make cookies and brownies for local firemen and policemen. The students expressed thanks for those who need to work during a holiday and might not see their families. Another student also mentioned writing to a child they know that needs to be cheered up during the holidays. These are some of the thoughtful actions the students want to do to spread kindness during the season.
